Stone holiday house with a big terrace and a wonderful view
The villa is an old stone house a few centuries old with around 65m² of living space and a generous terrace on the big site. The villa was completely newly restored and rebuilt in 2007 and is on an elevation about 1300 metres from Koutsouras and the coast, on the way to the mountain village of Staphrohori. The surroundings are hilly. The little village the house is near is calls Tsikkalaria and is a former retreat for the inhabitants of Koutsouras, of which there are mostly only stone remains and ruins left. Some of the houses have now been rebuilt carefully again, such as Villa Koutsouras. A little church has also been preserved.
You have this place all to yourself and can enjoy a fabulous view over the green valley with gardens and plantations, and of the Koutsouras bay. The eastern mountains rise behind the house. There are lovely gorges and paths inviting you to go walking. It is 3km to the nearest larger town, Makri Gialos. It is a two-hour drive by rental car to the Heraklion airport.
The house has a modern furnishing in a typical local style. Quality materials such as stone flooring and wooden ceilings, some old olive wood and solid stone were used. It has a living room-kitchen, a bathroom and two bedrooms. The kitchen is fully-equipped for five people and has a Bosch electric stove, a big American fridge-freezer, a coffee machine and a kettle, as well as a stone dining table. With an average of 320 days of sunshine a year, water is heated in an eco-friendly manner with solar energy, or optionally electrically. The living room is fitted with air conditioning that cools the whole house sufficiently, even at the height of summer. In winter there is a fully functional kitchen stove fired with wood. The bathroom has a bath and a washing machine. One of the bedrooms has a double bed (190cm long), and the other has a bunk bed (180xm long) and a sofa bed, for a maximum of three people. Therefore the accommodation is suitable for a family with 2-3 children, or for 2-4 adults. The maximum occupancy is five people. The terrace with a lovely view has a big fireplace area with a charcoal oven and a grill.
There are shopping facilities (baker, butcher, pharmacy, hairdresser, small supermarkets), a range of little tavernas and a little bar about 1300 metres away in Kousouras. Koutsouras is about 3km from the still quite original fishing harbour at Magri Gialos, which exudes a Greek holiday flair with its little tavernas and bars and some nice shops.
The section of coast is characterised by lovely beaches and fabulous little bays. The beach at Koutsouras is about 1300 metres away. The next larger sandy beach is in Magri-Gialos. One of the most beautiful beaches in the area is about 5km away in Analipsi and there are secluded dream bays on the way to Kalo Nero about 8km away. In the area you can walk through gorges or go on mountain tours by jeep. The caves are also adventurous, some of which you have to find and explore yourself. Geocoaching is a popular sport among some of the holiday-makers.
Crete is accessible all year round. The capital Heraklion has direct flight connections from several towns in Germany between April and October (TuiFly, Condor, Airberlin). There are also flight connections throughout the year via Athens, e.g. with Lufthansa or Aegean Airlines. Of course there are also ferry connections, e.g. from Piraeus or Patras.
It is recommended to hire a car to go on tours around the island or to get to secluded beaches. Local providers, such as the company Prima Car Rentals, offer a very good service with well-priced cars. There is a Prima Car Rentals branch just 5km away from the house, in Makrigialos. You can also hire cars reliably on arrival at Heraklion airport. You holiday can then start straight away on the 2-hour drive across the island to your holiday accommodation in Tsikkalaria, so you can gain a first impression of the beauty and diversity of Crete. You can return the car conveniently at the airport on departure, perhaps combining your departure day with a trip to the capital Heraklion.
