Tivat is a coastal town in southwest Montenegro, located in the Bay of Kotor. As of 2011, its population was 14,111. Tivat is the centre of Tivat Municipality, which is the smallest municipality by area in Montenegro. Tivat is located in the central part of the Boka, south of mount Vrmac. The municipality lies mostly south of the town, and has an exit to open sea at the tourist location Pržno inlet near Radovići village to the south. Its central part, where Tivat Airport is located, lies in fertile Grbalj valley. The airport is located near the isthmus of Luštica peninsula, which belongs to the municipality of Herceg Novi for the most part. The Bay of Kotor (Montenegrin: Boka kotorska), known simply as Boka, is a winding bay of the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro. The bay, once called Europe's southernmost fjord, is in fact a ria of the disintegrated Bokelj River which used to run from the high mountain plateaus of Orjen. The bay is about 28 km long from the open sea to the harbor of the city of Kotor and has a shoreline of 107.3 km. It cuts through the Dinaric Alps between the Orjen and Lovćen massifs. The narrowest section of the bay, the Verige strait, is only 340 m wide. As of 2013, it can be crossed by a ferryboat, but Montenegro is planning to build a bridge to span the strait, the so-called Verige Bridge. The bay has been inhabited since antiquity. Its well preserved medieval towns of Kotor, Risan, Tivat, Perast, Prčanj and Herceg Novi, along with their natural surroundings, are major tourist attractions. Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor has been a World Heritage Site since 1979. The religious heritage of the land around the bay — its numerous Orthodox and Catholic churches and monasteries — makes it one of the major pilgrimage sites of the region.
