Its name comes from the special semi-circular configuration of its hills, and its proximity to the parish of Calheta. This parish was one of the oldest places on the Island subject to colonization and agricultural exploitation after the discovery and is one of the parishes richest in heritage and artistic treasures. João Fernandes Andrade, known as João Fernandes do Arco, settled here. He owned vast lands of bread, mills and slaves, and established a binding house, with a chapel and private chaplain, at the end of the 19th century. XV. Arco da Calheta is mainly irrigated by a branch of the important Rabaçal levada and the levada called Madre Grande, which has its origin in Paul da Serra. Its borders are the parishes of Madalena do Mar, Canhas and Calheta.
18th century church, located in Sítio da Igreja. The parish split from Calheta in 1472, was based in the chapel of S. Brás and its first vicar was Father Pedro Delgado.
The main church was rebuilt in 1744, by auction to Cristóvão Gomes, for the amount of 9,350$00 réis, giving Fazenda Real two bells, one weighing 20 and the other weighing 6 arrobas, and receiving the old bell already cracked to be cast. It was blessed on January 1, 1755.
Our Lady of Loreto Chapel*
16th century chapel, located on the site of Lombada do Loreto. About this chapel, the following excerpt can be read in an old book from the parish archive: “this chapel is magnificent for its architecture and construction, it was built in the beginnings of this parish…”
The chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto, one of the oldest in the parish, was established by D. Joana de Eça, lady of Queen D. Catarina, wife of D. João III
The chapel has a set of Manueline architectural elements. “The main altar of the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Loreto underwent work at the end of the 19th century. XVIII, there is a painting on canvas from that time signed by Nicolau Ferreira and dated 1791″.
Arco da Calheta is set between the mountains and got its name from the surrounding hills and its proximity to the parish of Calheta. After the discovery of the island, this parish was one of the first to be submitted to huge agricultural explorations, giving origin to extensive lands with noble houses, chapels and cultivated areas.
The busiest time of the year is the 7th and the 8th of September, when the parish celebrates its annual procession and there is a fair to honour the patron saint São Braz.
